‘No whites’ graffiti in Birmingham investigated by police

Slogans appear in three locations, with CCTV capturing moment hooded figure sprays one on wall outside primary school

Racist graffiti in Birmingham reading “No whites” and “No whites allowed” is being investigated by police, The Telegraph can reveal.
The graffiti appeared in three locations across the inner-city Alum Rock neighbourhood last week.
CCTV footage obtained by The Telegraph shows the moment a hooded figure approaches the first location, a wall outside a primary school, at around 1.20am on Thursday.
After appearing to check whether he is being watched, he sprays “No whites” onto the wall before swiftly departing.
Another wall, in Langton Road, was later vandalised with the phrase “No whites”, while a third location in Farndon Road appeared to have been graffitied with “No whites allowed”.
Officers are investigating the graffiti and have been carrying out patrols in the area, West Midlands Police said. There is no suggestion that the individual captured on CCTV is responsible for the other graffiti.
Naveed Sadiq, 48, a community activist known as the Bearded Beys, claimed the graffiti was part of an effort to stir up racial tensions in the area.
He said: “This is a message going out for this individual. You know who you are, and we will find out who you are because the police are now involved in this situation. You will be found, you will be charged, and you will be prosecuted because this is not an isolated incident. This is one of many.
“A lot of people from the community are saying that this is someone from the outside, this is not someone from the community. It’s awful. We are a community that invites everyone. It is what the purpose of coming to the United Kingdom is, living side by side and respecting one another.
“I can’t see anybody from our community doing that [the graffiti]. People want to give us bad press. People want to say we are unwelcoming.”
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We are investigating after graffiti was sprayed at locations around the Alum Rock area. An investigation is under way to identify who is responsible, and we are carrying out CCTV enquiries.
“We are in contact with the community and will be carrying out patrols in the area. We are working with the local authority to ensure the graffiti is promptly removed.
“Anyone who can help with our investigation can contact us via Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, quoting crime reference 20/632434/24.”
It follows a similar incident in 2017, when graffiti that read “No whites allowed after 8pm” appeared in an area of Alum Rock.
The most recent graffiti is around a mile away from where men wearing masks and balaclavas gathered to protect the Village Islamic Centre in the suburb of Bordesley Green amid speculation of a far-Right march.
A large group of men could be heard chanting “Allahu Akbar” in a video posted on X as they vowed to protect themselves. One man was seen wielding what appeared to be a large bat.
When the anticipated rally failed to appear, a group split off and attacked a pub, believing that members of the far-Right English Defence League were drinking inside.
Last month, Office for National Statistics figures showed immigration had fuelled the biggest rise in the population of England and Wales for at least 75 years.
The population rose by almost 610,000 to 60.9 million between mid-2022 and the middle of last year – the biggest increase since 1949, when comparable records began.
The ONS said the growth was largely down to record levels of net migration, which stood at 622,000 for the year to mid-2023.
